An email offered to make my bad review vanish for a monthly fee

What was posted

A vague negative review with almost no specifics showed up on my RealSelf profile, and shortly after I received an email offering "reputation help" for a monthly retainer, with a not-so-subtle hint that "more reviews like that" could be avoided.

What actually happened

It was extortion wearing the costume of a marketing pitch. Because the review itself read as a mere opinion, the platform saw nothing actionable when I reported it, and there is no category for "I think this is a shakedown."

Impact

In aesthetic surgery, patients choose their surgeon almost entirely on reputation and photos, so the implied threat of a drip of bad reviews is genuinely coercive. For a few days I actually weighed whether paying would just make the problem disappear, which is exactly the trap, and I was angry at myself for even considering it.

Steps taken

I forwarded the email to my attorney and to my staff so there was a record, then chose not to respond at all. Being maneuvered toward paying to protect an ethical practice felt like a violation of everything the work stands for.
