A Reddit thread appeared in which a poster laid out their lab values, their medications, and details of our discussions, framing all of it as exposing my "negligence," and it invited a pile-on of commenters who knew nothing about the actual care.
I could not engage in any way without confirming and further spreading the poster's own private health information, which would harm them even as they were harming my reputation. The whole episode captured the core unfairness perfectly: a public, permanent accusation, and a physician legally required to stay silent about it.
Reddit's public, heavily indexed, searchable format meant the thread surfaced for anyone who searched my name, and the searchability was the worst part, because unlike a review buried on a specialty site, this was findable by anyone, including colleagues and prospective patients. So I watched sensitive medical details and a distorted account of my care circulate online, legally unable to say a single word.
I reported the thread as a disclosure of personal health information, but because the person was sharing their own data, the platform did not treat it as a violation.
