Called "outdated" by a review that steered patients to a competitor

This account was submitted by a healthcare provider and de-identified before publication. Details that could identify a patient or practice have been removed, and it is shared with the provider’s consent.

What was posted

A review criticized my "outdated approach" and steered readers toward a competing surgical group, using language that read far more like strategy than like a patient recounting an experience.

What actually happened

I could not prove authorship, and Healthgrades required exactly the kind of proof, that the reviewer was not a legitimate patient, that HIPAA bars me from producing. It is a rigged asymmetry: a competitor can imply I am behind the times, and I cannot even confirm whether the author was ever in my care.

Impact

Neurosurgery referrals are high stakes and intensely reputation sensitive, so even one such review can quietly redirect real cases, and in the weeks after I sensed hesitation from a referral source that had been steady. I have learned to lean on the colleagues who know my work directly, because the public record cannot be trusted to be fair.

Steps taken

I brought documentation of the oddly promotional language to the platform anyway, and it changed nothing.
