A patient posted their own medical records, and I had to stay silent

This account was submitted by a healthcare provider and de-identified before publication. Details that could identify a patient or practice have been removed, and it is shared with the provider’s consent.

What was posted

A reviewer posted the specifics of their neurological workup, including their medications and imaging results, right alongside a series of accusations about my care.

What actually happened

I could not engage with any of it, because even a gentle, general reply would confirm and further broadcast their private health information to anyone who read the exchange. The asymmetry is the entire problem in one image: the reviewer may say anything at all, and I, the physician, may say nothing.

Impact

So I watched sensitive medical details sit in public view while I stayed completely silent, which patients understandably read as coldness or indifference. My office staff felt the same helpless frustration, because they knew the fuller picture and could say nothing either.

Steps taken

I reported the post as a disclosure of personal health information, and Google's response did not treat it as a violation, since the person was disclosing their own data, not someone else's. It is a peculiar professional grief to be silenced on someone else's behalf.
