A billing dispute became a one-star verdict on my surgery

This account was submitted by a healthcare provider and de-identified before publication. Details that could identify a patient or practice have been removed, and it is shared with the provider’s consent.

What was posted

The review was one star and entirely about a billing dispute and a ninety minute wait in the lobby, with not a single word about the surgery itself, which went well and left the patient walking comfortably.

What actually happened

Billing at my practice is handled by a separate third party company that I do not control and often argue with on patients' behalf, yet the rating attaches squarely to my clinical reputation as a surgeon. I could not lay out the insurance backstory publicly without touching the patient's coverage details.

Impact

Anyone scanning my profile sees a low star score next to the word "orthopedic surgery" and draws exactly the wrong conclusion. It is a peculiar injustice to have your years of surgical training judged by a grievance about a waiting room and an invoice.

Steps taken

I asked my billing company to reach out to resolve the underlying issue, and they did, but the review never changed. The care was good and the paperwork was frustrating, and the internet cannot tell the difference.
