On the neighborhood app, an odd post nudged everyone toward my rival

This account was submitted by a healthcare provider and de-identified before publication. Details that could identify a patient or practice have been removed, and it is shared with the provider’s consent.

What was posted

The post asked neighbors for dentist recommendations, then answered itself by warning against my office and praising "the wonderful new practice that just opened." The phrasing was strangely polished for a casual neighborhood thread, reading like a planted endorsement. It offered no real account of a visit to me, only a vague caution folded into a glowing referral. The praise for the new practice matched its opening announcement almost word for word. It felt orchestrated to redirect the whole neighborhood at once. After thirty years I could tell it was not an organic recommendation. But neighbors do not see my suspicion, only the warning.

What actually happened

A new dental office had opened locally and was heavily promoting itself, and the post echoed its launch messaging. Nothing in the post described a real appointment I could recognize or verify. I believe it was posted to steer neighborhood referrals toward the competitor at my expense. Yet I cannot prove who wrote it behind a neighborhood handle, and I cannot review records to disprove a visit that likely never happened. HIPAA prevents me from publicly saying no such patient exists, because that implies I checked a chart. So a probable plant shapes my standing in the very community I have served for decades. The proof I would need is out of reach.

Impact

On a neighborhood platform, word of mouth is everything, and a planted post poisons the well. Longtime referral sources in the community grew quieter after it circulated, and I felt the loss. Thirty years of goodwill among my neighbors suddenly seemed vulnerable to a single orchestrated post. The weariness of defending my reputation this late, against an invisible hand, settled into a real burnout. My staff, many of them local, were disheartened to see us undercut among our own neighbors. It is exhausting to fight a rumor you cannot trace. I could not respond substantively without risking a privacy violation.

Steps taken

I flagged the post to the platform as suspected competitor promotion, and moderators declined to remove it as opinion. I asked about their policy on planted or coordinated posts and received a vague reply. My attorney told me that unmasking an anonymous neighborhood account would require legal steps I could not justify. I could not respond in detail without implying I had searched for a patient who may not exist. I posted a warm, general note inviting neighbors to visit and judge for themselves. The post stayed up. I now rely on the decades of trust I have built to outweigh one orchestrated recommendation.
